Native, Indigenous, and Aboriginal Peoples Education Patch

This patch program was created for girls to learn more about the people in their community, both the past and the present. The idea for this patch began when I noticed just how much of the history I was being taught in classes was lacking information on the Native perspective. I was lucky to have a class that focused entirely on minority perspectives in my senior year of high school, and that's where I discovered just how much information wasn't included in my other history classes. Even though we focused on Native American people for just 3 weeks, and mostly on the local tribes, I learned more than I could ever recall having learned during the rest of my school career.

After I realized there was so much I didn't know, I started seeing the lack of representation everywhere. I began wondering what else I didn't know, and I started exploring. I found many different resources, from social media accounts, videos, and museum websites that helped me to get even more interested in not just the information I was missing from history but also from what was currently happening around me. I wanted to create a patch program that wasn't just a heritage patch, or just about the past, but also showed girls what was happening around them today. I hope that you get to learn more about your local and national communities through this program!
